“The History, Philosophy, and Values competency area involves knowledge, skills, and attitudes that connect the history, philosophy, and values of the profession to one’s current professional practice. This competency area embodies the foundations of the profession from which current and future research and practice will grow. The commitment to demonstrating this competency area ensures that our present and future practices are informed by an understanding of our history, philosophy, and values” (ACPA & NASPA, 2010).
Competency Growth:
As the Assistant to the Chair of the Department of Higher Education and Student Affairs, I have spent a lot of time learning and reflecting upon the history, philosophy, and values of the College Student Personal program. In meetings with prospective students, I have called upon this knowledge and disseminate what the program does to prepare emerging student affairs professionals.
Through CSP 6010: Foundations and Functions of College Student Personnel, I have developed the history, philosophy, and values competency. Utilizing Student Services: A Handbook for the Profession (Schuh, Jones, Harper, & Associates, 2011), I have learned about the history of higher education and the student affairs profession, including the philosophy and values of the profession articulated through the professional associations. Through one assignment in particular, I learned more about a specific functional area I previously was not familiar with, veteran student services.
